Drug Abuse

The most commonly abused drug in the state of Rhode Island is cocaine. Cocaine with high purity is easily available in the state. It is the drug most frequently associated with violent crime in Rhode Island. Other illegal drugs do not pose such a big threat to the state.



Heroin is easily and widely available in Rhode Island. Its purity levels are steadily increasing. South American heroin is the most easily available one. Southeast Asian heroin is also available to a lesser extent in the state.

Marijuana is easily obtainable anywhere in Rhode Island. The main source of marijuana found in the state is Mexico. Marijuana from other countries and domestically producing marijuana are also available to a lesser extent. Hydroponically produced and BC Bud marijuana are not rare in the state. Abuse of Methamphetamine is not is not considered a significant threat to the state of Rhode Island.

The use and availability of club drugs are escalating in Rhode Island. Most of local police departments in the state have reported an increase in the use and availability GHB, MDMA, and ketamine.

The most popular diverted pharmaceutical substance abused in the state is OxyContin. Addicts use different methods to obtain the drug. Fraudulent prescriptions, pharmacy break-ins, doctor shopping, and hospital thefts are not uncommon here. Commonly diverted pharmaceuticals include hydrocodone (Vicodin), methylphenidate (Ritalin), hydromorphone (Dilaudid).

According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2000-2001), 1.30% of Rhode Island citizens reported past year dependence on illicit drugs. More than half (53.7%) of male high school students surveyed in 2001, reported using marijuana at least once in their life and around 60% of Rhode Island high school seniors surveyed in 2001, reported using marijuana at least once in their lifetimes.

Alcohol Abuse

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), around 59% of the Rhode Island population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. More than 22% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and above 76% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol in the past month. The latter one is the highest of any state in the U.S. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is more than 60%.

In the survey, around 27% of the Rhode Island people showed binge alcohol use and more than 36% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is near to 13%. In the state, 10.10% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
